How to Play Klondike Solitaire: Draw 1

Learn the Klondike Draw 1 setup, tableau moves, stock and waste, and how to complete the four foundations.

The layout and the goal

Klondike starts with seven tableau columns containing one to seven cards. Only each column's top card is face up. The remaining cards form the stock; cards turned from it go to the waste pile. Four empty foundations wait for the suits to be built from Ace through King.

The game opens in Draw 1 mode, so one stock card turns over at a time. Its visible controls also let you switch to Draw 3, which turns over three cards; only the top waste card is available to play.

Use the stock without skipping tableau options

Before turning over another stock card, check whether the waste pile or tableau has a move that reveals a hidden card. New information is often more useful than a move that only shifts face-up cards.

There is no guaranteed winning sequence for every deal. Keep empty columns and low cards in mind, and use the game's Undo control to inspect a choice when you are learning. For game-specific advice, see the Klondike rules and strategy guides.

Can any card go into an empty Klondike column?

No. An empty tableau column can be started by a King, including a valid face-up sequence led by a King.

How do I use the waste pile?

The waste pile holds stock cards turned face up. Play its available top card when it fits a tableau or foundation move.

What is the objective of Klondike Solitaire?

Build four foundations by suit, from Ace through King.
